For many years, WSP has worked alongside Moderna to develop and optimize its laundry operation. What started as individual projects grew into a long-term partnership based on trust, technical expertise and a shared focus on continuous improvement.
Then everything changed. A huge fire broke out which destroyed the entire facility.

The challenge
Moderna (Hardenberg, NL) faced the challenge of rebuilding their laundry from the ground up.
The objective was clear: a fully operational, modern and efficient facility within 365 days. The new laundry had to restore production capacity, ensure reliable processes and be ready for long-term growth. To achieve this, Moderna was looking for a partner who could take responsibility for the complete realization of the new facility.
The solution
From project management and engineering to installation, implementation and consultancy, we took responsibility for the full process.
Based on the previous situation, we analysed the laundry flows and redesigned the internal logistics. Container routes and walking distances were reduced to create a more efficient layout.
The facility includes:
The result
Ergonomics. Production speed. Fully automated laundry flow & process.
Michael Ellenkamp, hospitality responsible at Moderna, explains that WinWash® provides full visibility within the operation. The system makes it possible to track exactly where customer linen and products are located, while also enabling direct data analysis for better operational control.
“WinWash allows us to trace the exact location of our customers’ laundry and analyze our operational data directly from the system.”
Michael explains that Laundry Dashboard® has already delivered several operational improvements. It gives clear insight into cost prices per customer, machine and process, which helps the company maintain a strong and balanced price-quality ratio.
“With Laundry Dashboard, we can see exactly what we spend per customer, machine and process, which helps us offer the right price-quality ratio.”.
Ergonomic workplace
The layout is designed with short routes and minimal walking distances. The central soil sorting station and cart tilters support an ergonomic and structured workplace.
Fully automated laundry flow
Fully automated from soil sorting to clean storage, with integrated bag rail systems and conveyors.
High-capacity production
Automated sorting and integrated logistics ensure a stable and continuous production flow, built for consistent output and long-term capacity.
Another wonderful project at Moderna in Hardenberg! With thanks to Gert Stroeve and Luuk Hans for their trust, and to Herbert Kannegiesser GmbH for an excellent cooperation.
